Vicki Mooney – Latest Global Project – Regular Meeting
January 23 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The Rotary of Georgetown is applying for a global grant with Rotary International for a humanitarian project to help facilitate universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water and improve community hygiene knowledge, behaviors and practices that help prevent the spread of waterborne disease within the Livingston Municipality, Izabel Department of Guatemala. The Guatemalan Ministry of Health reports that 98% of the country’s water sources being rivers, lakes, wells and springs are contaminated. To help combat this problem participants with the Rotary of Georgetown and international partners will deliver a Sawyer water filtration kit to 46 villages effecting approximately 2,200 families. The Sawyer filtration kits are inexpensive (~$50.00), easy to replace, easy to mobilize, and very effective in removing 8 types of bacteria and 3 protozoans. Each unit delivers 1,000,000 gallons of clean water resulting in healthier and more productive families.
